• Get medical attention immediately to check whether or not you have been injured.
• Don’t shower, wash your hair, or change clothes.
• You may literally be be washing away traces of a crime and your clothes may be used as evidence.
• Call Safe Shelter crisis line – 701-251-2300 or 888-353-7233 or the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) crisis line – 701-252-1048. Calling either agency will allow you to reach the Sexual Assault Response Team (SART). The Sexual Assault Response Team, which includes a SANE Nurse, a Law Enforcement Officer, and a Safe Shelter Advocate, provides compassionate, informed treatment and support at the time of a rape crisis.
• It is up to you whether you have a medical exam that collects evidence, an exam for medical purposes only, or no medical exam at all.
• You can decide who you want or don’t want with you and you can say no to any part of the process.
• We encourage you to report your rape.

However, if you’re not sure whether or not you want to report but you have questions or want to talk about what happened to you, you can call Safe Shelter or the SANE crisis line (at the numbers listed above) any time.

You do not have to give your name or any other identifying information unless you choose to. An advocate from Safe Shelter can answer questions you may have about what will happen if you do report, and can talk to you about what kinds of reactions and feelings you might experience as a result of your rape.

A nurse from the SANE crisis line can talk to you about any medical concerns you may have as a result of the assault and can answer questions about sexually transmitted infections or pregnancy. Both can also refer you to other agencies that may be helpful to you.
