If you have left an abusive relationship but feel you may still be in danger, there are things you can do at home to make it harder for your abuser to have access to you:

• Tell your neighbors and your landlord that your partner no longer lives with you and that they should call the police if they see your abuser near your home.
• Rehearse a safety plan with your children for those times when you are not with them. Teach children why they must not open the door for anyone without your permission.
• Tell those in charge of your children’s school or daycare about who has permission to pick up your children. Give them a copy of your protection order.
• Change the locks on your doors.
• Make sure that curtains or blinds are closed completely.
• Add a door peephole and increase the outdoor lighting, if possible.
• Change your telephone number.
• Screen calls using an answering machine or caller identification.
