Some Common Sense Precautions

We are not suggesting, in any way, that you would be at fault if you are sexually assaulted, but here are some common sense things you can do to try to avoid being vulnerable to an assailant:
  • Rely on your judgment. If you think someone is pressuring you into unwanted sex, you’re probably right.
  • Assert yourself. You have the right to set sexual limits. Communicate those limits. Being coy and polite won’t work.
  • Pay attention to behavior that doesn’t seem right or makes you feel uncomfortable. Get to a safer place.
  • Express yourself. If someone says or does something you don’t want them to, say so. (Be loud and make a scene if you have to).
Sexual assault is always the assailant’s responsibility, no matter what the circumstances. The victim is never to blame.
