Some Precautions

Remember, it is never your fault if you are raped. But here are some things you can do to try to make yourself less vulnerable.

  • Don’t spend time alone with someone who makes you feel uneasy or uncomfortable. Trust your instincts. They are usually right. Try to remove yourself from situations that don’t feel right.
  • Stay sober and aware. Be aware of what’s going on around you and stay in control.
  • Know what you want. Be clear about what you want in your relationship. If you’re not sure, ask your partner to respect you and give you some time. If your partner tries to pressure or threaten you into doing something you’re not ready to do, it’s a sign that the relationship may not be a healthy one. Talk to someone you trust about it.
  • Go out with a group of friends and watch out for each other. Promise that you will check in with each other frequently and that you will leave together.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask for help, scream, or make a scene if you feel afraid or threatened.

Sometimes, even doing all these things cannot prevent you from being sexually assaulted. If it happens to you, it is NOT your fault. The only person responsible is the one who chose to commit a crime by sexually assaulting you.
